Lauren Sheehan, Songster
July, 2008

Hi everybody.
It's been a glorious month and I hope your gardens are as happy as mine finally is. The highlight of the month was an inspiring trip to Weiser ID, for the Weiser Friends of the Fiddle music and cultural edification week. www.stickerville.org Actually, there is a prestigious fiddle contest which is the ostensible event, but for many of us, it's a time to camp in very rustic conditions, get into dry air, and play and listen to stories and endless tunes/songs from a great variety of American acoustic genres. Yes, you do need to love fiddles to stand it for long. But the sound track of 5-20 simultaneous sessions, in tune, morning to morning, on mostly fabulous wooden instruments, really can't be beat. Especially when the sounds float into the late sunsets, lingering twilight, mingle under the stars and full moon, inspire dancing on the weed patches late into the night, and deep and lasting friendships. It's one of the richest pockets of unfettered oral transmission that I know of.

Waterfront Blues Festival LOTS of Blues...
Waterfront Blues Festival

Look for steam rising from the Front Porch Stage at Waterfront Blues Festival on Sunday, July 6th at 2PM, as the Terry Robb/Lauren Sheehan duo mix fire and water. Terry's burning guitar and Lauren's sparkling mandolin, his hot solos and her country blue vocals, and songs ranging from country blues to western swing, create a rich mix. Lauren describes the thrill of playing with Terry as "...my replacement for water ski jumping." There are many moods to this act though, ranging from saucy Memphis Minnie, to swinging Bob Wills, to down home Charlie Patton, all transformed in a unique artistic collaboration. We know Terry as one of the finest guitar pickers anywhere, and Lauren as back porch songster, but the energy that's created when they're stirred together is something else altogether. Listen for John Fahey in Terry's adventurous forays, and Howard Armstrong in Lauren's raucous mandolin harmonies, and groove to the deep roots of their music.

Terry Robb and Lauren Sheehan Of course I hope to see you at my show, but there are so many great acts that I encourage you to check out the schedule, and go down to hear some fabulous music. Sunday is my favorite day. My picks are Ruthie Foster,(we are talkin' BIG spirit here!), Phoebe Snow, Robert Belfour, (one of the last old blues guys), Rory Block, (a very early inspiration and influence for me), and cool locals Steve Cheseborough and Janice Scroggins/LInda Hornbuckle Gospel show.

I expect to be playing a lot there, you'll be able to find me. Get your tickets ahead of time, go early , it gets crowded, and wear good comfortable shoes! OH- this is your nearly LAST CHANCE for a beautiful Corona hat, as she has decided to stop making hats as her main stay.
