River City Folk - SUNDAY

Sunday, March 31 2pm Nebraska time, noon PST http://www.kios.org/schedule

This week, I am on the River City Music , a syndicated radio show hosted by Tom May (Mar 26- April 1) . The show is broadcast to over 150 stations all over the country but it'll be easy to listen on line this Sunday.

At 2 pm Nebraska time , that's probably 3 or 4 EST or noon PST, just go to http://www.kios.org/schedule , and look for River City Folk and hit the play button at 2 their time.

( I will post a copy on the web site so you can listen there if you miss it Sunday.)

Here's what the show is all about.

“River City Folk is an engaging mix of live performance, interview and recordings. Hosted by veteran singer-songwriter Tom May, each program features a folk artist or group from across North America who performs live in the studio. Through Tom's interview with the artist, and recordings that have influenced them, the listener is entertained by a unique perspective on the living tradition that is folk music ."

Female American Roots Musicians Get Boost From Northwest Couple

NPR story featuring Lauren, one of the women in the MusicBox Project which was just accepted into the Library of Congress as a 'Major acquisition" .

Dyan and Rick Arthur are wonderful and creative folks, so it's not surprising they would create such a powerful document of this rather obscure expression of American culture .

Last night I was chatting with Rhiannon Giddens, of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, and we were both beaming at being included in the group of women documented, as well as still rather stunned to know that the Library of Congress accepted the interview and performance footage of us all.

Here is an excerpt of the show, and you can follow the link to listen to the segment on line.

"Not a lot of women in American roots music are getting their due. That's according to a folklorist from near Seattle. She and her husband have made it their mission to change that. The Library of Congress has taken notice.

Dyann and Rick Arthur are in their element. We're at the Old-Time Music Gathering in Portland. Impromptu jam sessions and multiple concerts are underway across three floors of this performance hall.

As she prowls the halls, Dyann observes the ratio of male to female instrumentalists."

Banner Gibson Guitars - Book and recording project

John Thomas is writing a book about these guitars. Roughly, it is likely to span Orville, the depression through WWII, Kalamazoo Gals, guitars and guitar stories (about players of Banner guitars). I am looking forward to the absolute pleasure of making a recording, using Vintage Banners guitars, to go along with the book. This is scheduled for May and I'll keep you posted.
