  December, 2008

Happy Holidays!

I plan on enjoying them and wish for all of us that we have the sense to remember what matters and get on with it, for crying out loud! (where does that expression come from, anyway?)

Strawberry Rune
presents
Soulstice Celebrations
Forest Grove, Troutdale, and Portland

Elizabeth Nicholson and I look forward to celebrating the Yuletide with this seasonal show, based around old English and Celtic carols, winter songs, African -American Gospel, folk songs and occasional tales and poetry. The music is both familiar and obscure, secular and religious, illuminating while sometimes exploring the darkness, but always warming the audience with humanity, musically rich tones and the timeless themes of hope, strength, love and light. "It's a green light show", says one fan.

Portland Old - Time Gathering

Jan. 14-18, 2009
http://www.bubbaguitar.com/festival/

The Portland Oregon Old-Time Music Gathering is a grassroots volunteer-run festival that aims to celebrate and enrich the community of traditional Old-Time Appalachian Stringband Musicians. We wish to create an environment where the music is as meaningful as it is when we gather to swap tunes and play in a friend's living room or meet to play at a campsite during a summer festival.

As such, we feel that it is important to keep the event non-profit and volunteer run; whether we are taking tickets, sweeping the floor, organizing an event, or playing music for a concert; we are all volunteers contributing to make this thing happen.

If this entire event isn't enough to make you send an e-mail right away for tickets, (actually, it does sell out), maybe the chance to see Greg Clarke and me on stage, with lights and everything, will entice you. This gathering is the heart of our Old Time community in Portland, and so powerful that it's reputation drew Mike Seeger to come check it out. It's music and dance for love of music and dance. No kidding.

Greg and I will be in the Friday night concert.

Terry Robb and Lauren making a demo in December

...very exciting! We hope it leads to many more of our colorful country blues shows for you and maybe even and EP down the road.

And here we are, playing some tasty music at an all acoustic house concert in Eugene last November. What a treat that was. Thanks for the full house and great hospitality, at the Rolling and Tumbling series.

November Travels

November was one of the more poignant months I've had in a while, and very full emotionally. My cousin, Margaret Slade, had a magical house concert for me. Although we had sort of lost touch over the years, the extended family came out in force, put out a bountiful spread and filled the house with good cheer. My Dad and step Mom were there too, and as the evening developed, I sensed something very unusual unfolding. When I sing about love, family, loss, hope, etc., the characters are typically archetypes, in the sense that we all have different particulars in our stories, though the deeper emotions are shared. But on that night, in the midst of my own blood and childhood memories, I suddenly understood that I was singing about OUR lives, OUR Grandmother, OUR stories, joys and skeletons, that the archetypes can mean the personal. It was very poetic, and I hope my family was as touched as I did that evening.

Another great experience was from a Harmony singing workshop I gave at Club Passim's school of music. I couldn't decide what song to work with - until I walked into the classroom. There, on the wall, was a beautiful picture of a fine musician, Howard Armstrong. Now, I had spent bits of time with him up at Centrum, http://www.centrum.org/, know some of his material and have been influenced by him in some cool ways. He often sang "When He Calls Me" and said it was his Mother's favorite song. Well, it's perfect for harmonizing, and the students that day were very good singers, By the end of class, all were singing, rotating through different groups of 3, singing beautiful and close harmonies, knee to knee and clearly touched by the joy of singing together.

Little did they know how much I was struggling, as one of my dearest music pals and harmony singing buddies, Don Broom, had unexpectedly died a couple days before, and that I was heading out their door to catch a plane back home for his service. You students can not imagine the comfort of your sweet harmonies at that moment. Many thanks to my sister, Donna, who barely got to welcome and sing with me, before scooting me to the airport. Life is funny, but singing can sure be heavenly.
