Autumn 2018

0118_email_guitar02.pngWonderful Indian summer out here in the coast range of Oregon. I hope you all are enjoying our beautiful outdoors as much as I have been.
I have re-invigorated my teaching program in Portland this fall, so do get in touch if you'd like to try a lesson on guitar, mandolin, banjo, vocals, performance coaching, etc.. Also, you'll be able to catch me more often at the Muddy Rudder as I'll be there 3rd Wednesdays, with a scaled down acoustic presentation and sometimes a special guest.
I'll still be there first Fridays with a new band called Great Auntie Lo. This is a 4 piece with occasional guests, and we play bluesbilly modally - wodally good time songs and tunes. Genres span blues, standards, Tin Pan Alley, country western, Appalachian, folk, and more. Bill Uhlig is on bass, Steve Cleveland on piano and accordion, Fred Ingrams on drums and I play my 1956 Gibson ES175. What? You don't know what that is, well, it's just about the coolest guitar there is. Come hear it and admire it's lovely form.
Halloween is on a Wednesday, Oct 31, and I'm hosting an amazing evening at the Rudder. It's an invitational open mic sort of thing, many of Portland's stellar musicians will be there, presenting songs on the themes of the mysterious, supernatural, murder ballads and more. Guests include Kate Power and Steve Einhorn, Bob Soper, Eleanor Ellis (on tour from MD), Ben Davis, Mona Warner, John Manns, Steve Cheeseborough, Les Pyrettes, and who knows who else may show up ... rumor has it that Tillamook Burn may even make a surprise appearance.

0118_email_icon01.pngI know many of you are planning your December holiday and social gatherings. If you would like to create and evening of humanistic warmth for yourself and friends, consider bringing my intimate Soulstice show to your home. Steve Cleveland, on piano and accordion, joins me for a program exploring the themes of darkness and light, literally and metaphorically, which permeate all of our lives as winter solstice approaches. We present songs, poetry, short stores and vignettes that honor our human condition and celebrate that light will indeed return. It's a hopeful thought, eh?

Portland's finest jug band musicians team up for the afternoon

Barbecue Orchestra – Originally formed with Fritz Richmond in the 1990’s, this deep collection of local talent has performed with Lauren Sheehan and Mary Flower more recently.

Eagle Ridin’ Papas – Led by Johnnie Ward and other roots music veterans, the Eagle Ridin’ Papas bring an old school jug band vibe to our event.

Smut City Jellyroll Society – Representing the jazzier side of jug band music, the Jellyroll Society will have you up and dancing, or blushing from the double entendres.

How Long Jug Band – Always carrying the flame for jug band music, this group’s research into the Memphis Jug Band sparked this gravestone benefit project.
