Recommended Listening:

I recommend Eleanor Ellis, a very fine Piedmont player and singer, and a delightful person as well. Here is a cool anti-war blues song on video.

Upcoming Showcasing Opportunities
It's a busy season for booking and music conferences. Lauren looks forward to two distinctive showcases coming up at both the Arts NW and FAR West conferences. These are short and intense performances given for peers and presenters looking for talent for their own arts series, festivals and events. Sidemen Bill Uhlig, will join Lauren in Eugene, Or, and Joel Tepp makes a guest appearance in Phoenix, AZ.

Vocal Harmony Workshops
How to Find and Keep a Part

Oct 18 - Aritchoke Music, Portland, OR
http://www.artichokemusic.com/community/classes.php

Nov 9 - Club Passim, Cambridge, MA
http://www.clubpassim.org/musicschool/?school=current

Explore how to find your key, how to think of melody and then how to find harmony parts. We'll learn a folk song melody and then one other harmony line. We'll approach this from a basic, southern bluegrass style, but talk about other styles, variations, possibilities, etc. AFter working through one song, we'll repeat the process with another so you singers start getting a feel for this process, and how to apply it to any song.

We'll sing in a large group, some smaller ones, shift your groupings, and do some other variations so that students get to experience some up close harmonies and different vocal colorings. There will be lots of singing.

Being able to sing mostly on pitch is desirable, and anyone who can NOT already find and keep parts ought to find the class helpful.

Please call Artichoke or Lauren to register and learn what to bring.

Private Lessons
We've gotten off to a great start, and I feel lucky to have great students again. We meet about 2x/month, and students play guitar, banjo, mandolin, most sing and some come for coaching. You are all inspiring and keeping me scratching my head about how to inspire you! Do give a call if you are interested in lessona.

The Muddy Rudder- Unusual Guests and A New Menu!
8105 SE 7th, Portland, Or  |  503 233 4410

The Rudder continues to develop as an outstanding neighborhood pub and acoustic music spot. The new chef, Kris Jonkers, has taken full advantage of the kitchen remodel and pizza oven, adding scrumptious pizzas, strombolie and hot sandwiches, refreshing the salads and healthy sandwiches and sneaking in a few extras on the menu. The outside seating expanded over the summer and the beer continues to satisfy a micro-brew lover's urge. Rumors of a new sound system may prove true in a couple months, and great musicians are a staple Thursdays-Sunday.

I'm happy to present some musicians there this month who may be new to many of you. On Oct, 16, Ray Bierl, Cowboy singer, fiddler, guitar man with a raw silk voice will be joining me on Thursday, up from Oakland, as part of his CD release tour for Any Place I hang My Hat. On Friday, Oct 17, enjoy Bruce Reid and Bonnie Zanow, multi-instrumentalists and singers in the broadest of old-time traditions, not to mention just downright fine human beings, down from Seattle.

Look for jug bands the Bad Mittens, Oct 11 and Conjugal Visitors, Oct 18, up from Eugene, as well as the regulars we look forward to every month, Johnnie Ward, The Reverb Bros, Cafe Cowboys, Greg Clarke, etc. We try to keep the calendar in the papers and you can always call to see who is playing. Special Halloween event Thursday, Oct 30, Spooky Songs, hosted by Strawberry Rune and guests. That should be an interesting collection of songs of the supernatural, murder and other oddities.

DARE TO BE SQUARE WEST
Oct 9-12
http://www.bubbaguitar.com/d2bs/

Is a week end event, an extended workshop to explore vintage square dancing and dance a lot! If you want to dance your socks off to some of the greatest callers and old-time dance bands, you can participate in just part of the week end. Portland is one of the finest places in the country to hear, dance to and play authentic and deeply inspired old-time music, so yet it while you can!

November Tour in NE
Lauren will be touring in MA in early Nov, as well as attending and showcasing at NERFA, in NY. Look at the calendar for dates if you are back there!
