New CD Preview/Fundraising Concert April 10 8 pm $10 door Artichoke Music

I am going back to Big Red studio to finish my 3rd CD, along with an extraordinary group of Portland luminaries. Come be part of the countdown!

A couple years ago, I decided to explore music closer to home and tour less. It's been quite satisfying in many ways, especially because of the local musical collaborations that emerged from the process. Those collaborations, along with my adult music lesson program loosely affiliated with Artichoke Music, give me great joy, variety, aspirations and inspirations and keep the music alive, both at home and in community. So, I decided it would be fun to record and create something of a Portland Portrait with several of the musicians I work with.

On Saturday night, several , but not all, of those players will join me for a fund raising concert of music we are preparing to record. Some of the money from admission goes to Artichoke for their non-profit needs and expenses, and the rest goes to recording costs. It should be a pretty amazing show.

THE LINE UP

Terry Robb, guitar master, or monster in the most delightful sense, will be playing slide and some guitar. How many of you have had the priviledge of hearing him play Hank Williams? http://www.terryrobb.com/

Johnnie Ward is one of the elder statesmen of the Portland jass/blues scene and one of the coolest cats I know. He is considered by many to be one of the finest harmonica players , but I especially enjoy his saxcello on several songs. It is really an honor for me to be having him join us on the project. http://www.laurensheehanmusic.com/bands_sharkskin-revue.php

Laura Quigley is a wonderful bass player that many of you know from Misty River . http://www.mistyriverband.com/

Strawberry Rune plays Celtic -Americana and has lots of 3 part harmonies. Other band mates are Betsy Branch, fiddle, and Elizabeth Nicholson, harp. We vary our concert material with the agrarian cycles, turning to the sun ourselves as much as possible. http://www.laurensheehanmusic.com/bands_strawberry-rune.php

Ed Capenter, Artist (and my fabulous husband), has a new documentary.

This is such a cool video and I am so proud that I have to share it with you. Ed quietly contributes a great deal of beauty around the country and world through public art, and here is a revealing documentary about some of his work and processes. Let me know what you think.

Pt Townsend and Pt Angeles, May 27-30 Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts

I look forward to playing at the upstage again in Port Townsend, and then being part of the lovely JFFA in Pt Angeles over the Memorial Day weekend. That festival is small and intimate, has unusual and varied performance halls and a great variety of acts. The sense of community, care and breadth of Art is impressive. It is one of my favorite festivals and I look forward to being part again.

Wepecket Island Records
Piedmont Pickers http://www.wepecket.com

I am very pleased to announce that I will be 'joining the family' of Wepecket Island recording artists this spring for a Piedmont blues CD. Jack Radcliffe is producing this compilation project with many other inspiring players and it's very exciting to be part of his label. We work on my songs this May, and hope to release this year. (That means 2 new Cds for you fans who keep asking for more.)You can learn more about the Wepecket Island label and catalogue through the link above.

Ragtime' Jack Radcliffe, chief dishwasher and visionary for this NE record company, has a great love for his musicians and the music they make and that love shines above all else when he is around the music. "Traditional American Music by Modern Masters" is the tag. Jack produces several different styles, has wonderful musicians and good folks, all rooted in, but not enslaved to, traditional feels. Note that the Roots Review Tour is heading out soon back east and in the Midwest, so do see a show if they are coming your way.

Jack has been wooing me to join his team since we first met at the New England Regional Folk Alliance a couple years ago. We were part of a very sweet tribute showcase to Etta Baker, and shared lots of her tunes and some personal stories, as well as string band music related to that which she played. Etta was a huge inspiration to me, so this introduction was auspicious and I will be recording a medley of some of her songs on the project. Thanks for having me, Jack. Her e is one of the artists that I grew quite fond of, Sherman Lee Dillon, finalist in the International Blues Challenge this year.

Muddy Rudder - guests Dave Mullaney and Thad Beckman

Many new guests have been featured on Thursdays at the Rudder, and two more will join me this month. Thad and I will play a lot together, and that is something I have been looking forward to for a long time. See calendar at left .
