Lauren Sheehan, Songster
  March, 2009

It sure has been a beautiful February, and Portland looks ready for spring. I look forward to this month, not only because I get to work in the garden more, but because I have a few choice concerts to give around my home town for a change! These will be inspiring collaborations and I really look forward to working with these musicians and fine folks. If you live far away and won’t be making any of the shows, I hope you check out these artists, as they are favorites of mine - and you just may become a fan of theirs, too! Note the harmonica and slide workshops that the Kings of Mongrel folks offer before their show.

These concerts are among the most exquisite in town. I just love the grand architecture , the elegant staircase, the most excellent acoustics and most interesting audiences!

Our show will be highlighting Vintage Americana, from blues to ballads. We promise lots of close harmony with that special family blend! Zoe will be passing through on her spring break, so this is a rare opportunity to catch us live for a while.

Out of the wild untamed North, The Kings of Mongrel Folk are leading a mighty cavalcade of blues, folk and country music to capture your imagination and astonish your sensibilities. Orville Johnson and Mark Graham, The Kings Of Mongrel Folk, bring their supreme mastery of the guitar and harmonica, combined with soaring, soulful vocals to a wide array of blues, breakdowns, haunting ballads and comic masterpieces.

Orville Johnson is a legendary, multi instrumental string slinger adept at a myriad of blues folk and jazz styles. His singing, sophisticated yet untamed will have you shouting for more while you marvel at original Johnsonian compositions including the classic "Blueprint for the Blues".

Mark Graham, described by Hohner Easy Reeding Magazine as "a total master of the harmonica" and by The Old-Time Herald as "one of the pre-eminent harmonica players blowing today" is one of the few players schooled in the blues as well as the melodic and rhythmic intricacies of Southern string band music. He can burn it up or evoke the blues moaning of the delta and piedmont. The songwriting of Mark Graham is a strange and singular universe that covers the big subjects: Natural Science, Mathematics, Cosmology, Love, Death, Food, Economics and the Classics of literature.

An evening with The Kings of Mongrel Folk will bring you into a world of lonesome terror, mountain hilarity and spell binding artistry.
And an afternoon workshop may be more than you bargained for!

The Kings are coming for you!
