Portland Folk Music Society Concert with Lisa Ornstein & Dan Compton, Lauren Sheehan

Jan 21 7 30pm CARVIN HALL, 16TH and SE Division Portland OR $14, 12 PFS Members

http://www.ornsteincompton.com/ I am delighted to be sharing the stage for Portland FolkMusic Society with two of my favorite monster Portland players, Dan Compton and Lisa Ornstein. We will be bringing up music from deep in the well for you, representing a wide range of North American music; Country Blues, French Canadian, Irish, Old-Time, Contra Dance tunes, folk songs and more. It'll be a fantastic and uncommon collection of North American musical heritage and I hope many of you can come and enjoy the special and unusual concert. I'll do a set, they'll do a set and we'll join for a few tunes.

Group folk Class Jan 19 - Feb 23 7 30 - 9 pm Wednesdays

2960 NW Quimby St 97210 $120 6 week class, $25 drop in

laurensheehan@earthlink.net or call 503 227 4259

Voices and all instruments welcome to join this Americana acoustic music class. It's designed for musicians who want to play with others, learn new songs and explore ways of playing with others. Expect a diverse collection of material, from trad to 60's pop-folk , (like John Prine or Neil Young), bluegrass and old-time, new and common folk and folk-blues. We will work on basic skills like how and what to listen for; keeping time, keys, rhythm, harmony singing, what kinds of cues can be helpful, the social relevance of a given session, how different traditions approach playing together differently and , well, we'll see what else.

Basic skills are necessary although a beginner who doesn't expect us to slow down to beginner pace is welcome to scramble with us. Give me a call if you are interested, as critical mass is needed to make this work. laurensheehan@earthlink.net or call 503 227 4259

Atomic Cocktails - with Johnnie Ward Feb 1 8 pm

Mock Crest Tavern 3435 North Lombard Street Portland, OR 97217

It's a blast, Atomic cocktail night with the elder statesman Johnnie Ward and his Eagle Ridin' Papas jug band. Expect changing drink specials guaranteed to mushroom your mind, new tunes and hokum, as Mr. Chauncey blows the coolest jug west of the Mississippi. That's right folks, it's a modern jug band with a jug.
